The secret is in the balance of simplicity. You want people to find their way around your site easily. If the body of your blog is readable (i.e. not cluttered with lots of graphics, busy colors, and flash ads), people will be more inclined to stick around and explore. But if your site as a whole is too boring and plain, people will take one look, make a snap judgement (sometimes subconsciously), and might not delve into the fantastic content you just spent hours creating and formatting in your latest post.
