1 Enoch Cover Art

What an amazing book to do cover art for! Sean Griffin of Kingdom in Context liked my illustration style – which tends to be a mix of cartoony + technical with bold line-art – for his contextual study guide of 1 Enoch, an ante-deluvian text intended for those who will be alive at the consummation of the ages. Sean envisioned the cover laid out as a movie poster with vignettes at different depths of field, then encouraged me to have fun with it.

It starts out with young Enoch looking toward the Garden in the background, the hills become flood waves, the waves in front of the ark become the top of trees with a stream which morphs into the Garden framing, while the right mid-ground cluster of Watchers + giants generate a crack to turn into the vines – dry on the right, beautiful greenery on the left. Enoch’s back is turned against the mid-ground cluster to make them seem outcast. The hands where old Enoch and Noah connect are directly under young Enoch, tying the closeup glimpse of the Garden in the front to the outside of the Garden in the background. The contents inside reveal that Enoch truly saw the end from the beginning!

The way the art flows is from the top-left corner to mid-right to lower mid-left all the way down to bottom-right, which is how the eye naturally moves and studies an image. Having the title at the bottom may also further contribute to one having an itch to turn the page over.

“Only scholars in the last couple hundred years have expressed their disbelief in the authenticity of 1 Enoch and its claims. These scholars, raised in modern generations, have been taught narratives of origin of life for mankind and purposeless future of mankind that run contrary to the narratives expressed in 1 Enoch. A generation of men who do not believe in the foundational setting of 1 Enoch’s narratives will struggle to understand its relevance and reality, but this too, is addressed in 1 Enoch, as it details the creation model, the Creator’s instructions for living, the promised immortality given to the faithful among mankind, and those who reject that truth.” – Sean Griffin

PS. The cover art WITH title is my conceptualization. The actual book layout isn’t mine… but perhaps it will be if there is a version 2. 😉
